His favorite writing refuges in Paris were the Latin Quarter and Montparnasse. The bohemian lifestyle he depicted made a great contribution to travel literature.

As a living museum, the Parisian streets still exude the same charm as when Hemingway wrote in its cafés or strolled through the Luxembourg Gardens. The 5th and 6th arrondissements were the centre of Hemingway’s Paris life. We will walk in his steps and share many anecdotes about his seven hedonistic years in Paris. Before leaving, we will have a drink at la Closerie des Lilas to toast our absent host, Hemingway, known to his friends as: Papa, Hem, Champ (boxing), Ernestoic, Tatie, Tiny or Wax Puppy.

Who was Gertrude Stein? Who was Sylvia Beach?

During the Roaring Twenties, when money was plentiful and exchange rates favourable, American writers drifted in and out of Paris. These young dreamers were looking for the bohemian lifestyle that would set them apart from the values of American materialism. This growing literary colony soon took headquarters in Montparnasse and the Latin Quarter, where the mood of futility and despair led to hedonism and true literary genius.

On the Left Bank of Paris, around Odéon and Saint Germain des Prés, we will take you to the places where Gertrude Stein held court with writers T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and painters as Picasso and Matisse while Toklas poured tea and served cookies to their wives.

We will walk in Stein's footsteps, and follow Sylvia Beach; along the way, you will learn many charming anecdotes about this great literary circle. Walking through the Luxembourg gardens, where I spent my childhood, we will discover little historical treasures, before heading to Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company's library, where she hosted James Joyce and other writers.
